Do you all remember these? These sandwiches Salvadoreños are part of every family reunion and when they’re not... someone will angrily ask "why no one made them." This recipe is for those that don’t like to cook or don’t feel comfortable enough to chop a whole cabbage, or just want a quicker way to make these sandwiches for special occasions with their loved ones. This is one out of the 1,000 ways there is to make these, but with all the flavor @naturasusa Ranchera sauce brings to the table, the flavor is not compromised! Natura’s Ranchera sauce has 4 tomatoes in each pouch and is seasoned with other veggies and herbs. Try it yourself and get yourself a pouch through the link below!

sandwiches salvadoreños

Recipe:

  • 1 Rotisserie chicken

  • 1 bag of shredded cabbage and carrots

  • 1 Naturas Ranchera sauce pouch A

  • 1 Tsp chicken bouillon

  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise

  • 1/4 cup Mustard

  • Salt and pepper

  • 1/2 cup of water

Instructions:

1. Shred the rotisserie chicken and remove bones, skin and ligaments.

2. In a hot saucepan add 2 tbsp of butter and sauté the shredded cabbage and carrots unti translucent. You may have to do this in batches if you use a smaller sauce pan. Once it's translucent, set to the side in a bowl and let it cool to room temperature.

3. In the same sauce pan, add 1 tbsp of butter and sauté the chicken. Season with salt, pepper and 1 tsp of chicken bouillon.

4. Add 1 pouch of Naturas ranchera sauce and 1/2 cup of water to the chicken. Mix and incorporate well. Cover the saucepan and let it stew for 10 minutes on low-medium heat or until most of the water has been consumed. This will prevent the chicken from being too saucy. Once it’s done, set to the side and let it cool completely.

5. Once both the chicken and cabbage mix are cooled down, combine the chicken, cabbage, mayo and mustard. Mix well, taste test and adjust the salt and pepper to your preference.

6. Assemble the sandwiches! This batch was enough for 12-18 sandwiches, depending on how much filling is added to each one.

Traditionally we wrap them in napkins but feel free to serve them directly on a plate! Enjoy with a glass of horchata Salvadoreña or cold kola champagne! For the video recipe head over to my Instragram or Tiktok.
